The first thing to do with any shell is to unzip it to your hard
drive. Use a utility such as Winzip
to do this. I'd recommend unzipping the shell to the root of C drive,
to keep things simple. Make sure you have a backup of your system
files before doing this, just in case something goes wrong, which
is unlikely, but better safe than sorry. Make sure you have at least
your system.ini, anyway.
{For an easy way, try ShellON. I designed it so I have to
advertise it :) For the record, here's how to do it manually.}
The next thing you have to do is edit your system.ini which
is in your c:\windows directory. Open the run promt and type "sysedit"
(no ""). A window should popup. Choose the System.ini window.
Look down the text until you find a line saying "shell=xxxx",
where xxxx is probably "explorer.exe". You need to
change this line so it reads "shell=path to your new shell".
For example for geOShell this would be "shell=c:\geoshell\geoshell.exe".
Finally reboot your computer and the new shell should be used instead
of Explorer. That wasn't to difficult now, was it?
If something goes wrong, heres how to get back to explorer:
First switch off your computer. Next switch it back on and when "Starting
Windows 95" appears, press F8. Select "Command Prompt
Only", and then type "edit c:\windows\system.ini"
at the prompt. Then change the shell= line back to "shell=explorer.exe"
and save system.ini and exit. Finally reboot your PC and then everything
should return to normal!
